Whether you are currently behind on bills or know you soon will be, resist the urge to hide your head in the sand. You can gain control of the situation by doing the following:
- Contact creditors before missing a payment
- Be honest and calm
- Be conservative and realistic with time frames and financial promises
- Offer a specific solutions
- Keep a log of people you spoke with and what was said
- Correspond primarily by mail
- Never send post-dated checks
- Know your legal rights
- Maintain contact with creditors
