Earth Day is April 22—a day we set aside to understand important environmental issues and the actions we can take to protect our environment. RCU took a big step in going green
when, in 2015, we put solar panels on the roof of our administrative offices. To see how much energy (and savings) it produces, come and see the digital reading in the lobby of our Cleveland Avenue branch and headquarters.
We’d like to challenge you, too, to consider adding solar panels to your home. To offer some good reasons for doing so, we consulted the United States Green Building Council (USGBC) and found these benefits.
- Help the environment. Solar systems derive clean, pure energy from the sun and help combat greenhouse gas emissions and our dependence on fossil fuel.
- Reduce or eliminate energy bills. Solar panels draw energy whether it’s cloudy or sunny and will help power your home.
- Earn tax credits and rebates. There are federal, state, and Solar Renewable Energy Credits (SRECs) that help generate a return on your investment.
- Save and gain money. Not only does solar save you money as soon as it’s installed, but it also improves your resale value. Research shows most homeowners see a $5,911 resale value increase per installed kilowatt. As of 2020,
new California homes will be mandated to have solar panels. Having them on your home will help you compete in the resale market.
