Tips for Conserving Water and Saving Money

Jun 09, 2021

As you embrace water-saving techniques this summer, you should see water costs go down. Here are seven tips for conserving water and lowering your water bill:

  1. Wash dishes efficiently. According to the EPA, running your dishwasher uses less water than hand-washing your dishes. If you don’t have a dishwasher, fill a tub in the sink to save water.

  2. Keep a pitcher of water in the fridge. This way every drop is for you and none goes down the drain.

  3. Fix leaky faucets. A leaky faucet dripping at the rate of one drip per second can waste more than 3,000 gallons per year, says the EPA. Repair the leak and it can save you a lot over time.

  4. Run full loads of laundry. Not only does running additional small loads waste water, it puts wear and tear on your machine.

  5. Swap out shower heads. Now may be a good time to invest in a low-flow or high-efficiency shower head. Look for a flow rate of no more than 2.5 gallons a minute.

  6. Water your lawn early or late in the day. If you water in the heat of day, you lose some water to evaporation.

  7. Upgrade your landscaping to include more drought-tolerant plants and landscaping such as stone. These practices can also help create defensible space in the event of a wildfire.

As you make changes to mitigate drought, we’re here to make sure you have the financial means to adequately prepare. Up-to-date fire prevention and drought management is more critical than ever, and we firmly believe in supporting any and all measures our community can take to stay safe.
