Financial Workshop Gives Teens a “Bite of Reality”

Redwood Credit Union celebrates 100th Teen Financial Fair March 7th at San Rafael High School

San Rafael, Calif. — Redwood Credit Union (RCU) will offer a free “Bite of Reality” financial workshop for San Rafael High School students on Wednesday, March 7th from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 am. The event provides teens with an interactive simulation of the money management challenges that most adults contend with daily, including managing housing expenses and other bills, and paying for child care. This event marks RCU’s 100th “Bite of Reality” fair in the North Bay.

“Bite of Reality gives students a realistic—and often surprising—taste of the financial decisions and challenges that adults face every day,” said Wrynn Valentine, RCU’s financial wellness advocate, who coordinates the events at schools and youth organizations throughout the North Bay. “RCU is thrilled to help teach teens how to get on the path to a successful financial future.”

Bite of Reality participants receive a fictional identity, which includes an occupation, salary, family, credit cards, and a checking account. They then visit several stations to purchase housing, transportation, food, clothing, child care, entertainment, and other necessities. During the exercise, the teens must make challenging decisions when they discover their salary may not cover both their desires and necessary expenses. RCU volunteers are on hand to help students with their budget and financial priorities.

RCU's first Bite of Reality event was held at San Rafael HS in April of 2013. Since then, RCU has partnered with 24 North Bay schools and 11 youth organizations to offer the program. More than 7,600 teens have participated in RCU’s “Bite of Reality” events to date.

One Marin school administrator stated, “I have never seen kids so engrossed for 2 hours. The faculty that participated felt it was one of the most worthwhile experiences our students had this year.” A student who recently participated in the program said, “I'm acting like my father and this isn't even real life!"
