“Redwood Credit Union is passionately committed to financial education and we strongly believe that money management skills learned at a young age are beneficial for a lifetime.” - Brett Martinez, President & CEO
We are proud to offer – in partnership with the Sonoma County Office of Education and Santa Rosa City Schools – our Banking and Finance Academy. This free, 16-hour program teaches high school students the basics of money management.
Using materials from the National Endowment for Financial Education - High School Financial Planning Program and other sources, this class covers such topics as creating and maintaining a budget, personal spending habits, buying a car, investing, insurance, managing credit and debt, and discussions on choosing a career.
The Banking and Finance Academy is open to all teens ages 15 to 18 and is held at Redwood Credit Union’s Administrative Offices. The Academy is currently offered twice a year, once during spring break and once again in June.
Ultimately, we hope to see financial management skills made a part of the state’s high school economics curriculum as a graduation requirement for all seniors. Until that time, we are diligently working with local school districts and we are pleased to see that some schools are already looking at ways to incorporate financial education into their existing classes.
