This month marks the one-year anniversary of the North Bay Fires. While the fires significantly impacted 4 of the 8 local counties we serve, it also proved how strong our communities can be when people unite to help each other. We were honored to play a part by helping our Members, employees and communities in many ways, including providing emergency loan and payment relief programs to affected Members; assisting affected employees with temporary lodging, childcare, time off, and other support; and, through our community fund in partnership with the Press Democrat and Senator Mike McGuire, by collecting and distributing more than $32 million in donations to assist fire survivors. As our communities recover, we’ll continue to work together with our Members and local partners, helping to rebuild and focus on a brighter future.
Helping our communities isn’t something we do only in times of crisis or financial hardship. Passionately serving the best interests of our communities is our mission and our focus. Credit unions were created by and for people who share a common bond as a way to help each other out financially. This sense of community is part of the fabric of RCU, and it’s at the heart of what we do every day.
Our employees live alongside our Members in the communities we serve, and we want to make those communities a better place. From providing free financial education to volunteering and fundraising, to serving on local nonprofit boards, our staff gets involved on the ground level to make a difference. When our employees are asked what they love most about working for RCU, our community involvement is consistently the top answer year after year.
Thursday, October 18 is International Credit Union Day—a day to honor all the ways credit unions help their communities, and celebrate our Member-owners for sharing in our cooperative. By banking with us, you’re also helping to build a stronger community. That’s the credit union difference, and on behalf of all of us at RCU, thank you for being part of it.
