5 Ways to Ensure Safe ATM Transactions

March 29, 2023

ATMs provide convenience and accessibility for people to withdraw cash, check their account balance, and perform other financial transactions. However, with the rise in ATM-related crimes, it’s crucial to take precautions to protect yourself and your finances. Keep these things in mind when using an ATM:

  1. Choose a secure location: Look for a well-lit and secure ATM location. ATMs located in isolated or poorly lit areas are more vulnerable to criminal activities.

  2. Be aware of your surroundings: Keep an eye out for suspicious people or activities, and if you feel uncomfortable, leave the area immediately. If you notice any suspicious activity, report it to the authorities and/or the financial institution immediately.

  3. Guard your PIN when entering it: When entering your PIN, make sure to cover the keypad with your hand or body to prevent anyone from seeing it. Never share your PIN with anyone and avoid writing it down or storing it on your phone or computer.

  4. End your transaction: After completing your transaction, always make sure to end the transaction properly. This will prevent anyone from accessing your account and carrying out unauthorized transactions.

Safety tip! If you use the contactless card function on RCU ATMs, your session automatically ends after each transaction giving you peace of mind when you walk away.

  5. Grab your card and cash: Before you walk away from the ATM, remove your card if the machine held it during the transaction. And don’t forget to take your money if you made a withdrawal.

Your safety is our priority. If you suspect fraudulent activity on your RCU card or account, please contact RCU immediately—even after hours at 1 (800) 479-7928.
