Payroll Tips for Small Business Owners: How to Simplify Payroll and Support Business Growth
September 18, 2026
For many small business owners, managing payroll can feel time-consuming and complex. Between tracking employee hours, processing paychecks, managing payroll taxes, and maintaining compliance, payroll requires careful attention to detail.
With the right payroll processes and financial partners in place to support your business, payroll operations can be a lot easier. Read the following tips to help your business stay organized, support employees, and operate more efficiently.
1. Keep Employee Information Up to Date
Accurate payroll starts with accurate records. Maintain current employee information, including tax forms, direct deposit details, pay rates, benefits deductions, and time-off balances.
Review records regularly to help reduce payroll errors and ensure employees are paid correctly.
2. Establish a Reliable Payroll Schedule
Consistent payroll practices help build employee trust and improve financial planning. Whether you pay employees weekly, biweekly, or semimonthly, sticking to a predictable schedule can make payroll management easier and help employees better manage their finances.
3. Use Accurate Time Tracking
Reliable timekeeping is essential if you have hourly employees. Be sure to track regular hours, overtime, paid time off, and holidays to pay your employees properly and minimize payroll disputes.
Digital time-tracking tools can simplify recordkeeping and improve efficiency. Find one that’s easy to use to improve adoption within your organization.
4. Stay on Top of Payroll Tax Obligations
Payroll tax compliance is a critical responsibility for business owners. Missing deadlines or filing inaccurate information can result in penalties and unnecessary costs.
Work with payroll professionals or take advantage of payroll services to give you peace of mind that your tax filings, withholdings, and payments are completed accurately and on time.
5. Automate Payroll Processes
Payroll software and automated payroll solutions can save valuable time by handling calculations, direct deposits, tax withholdings, and reporting for you.
Automation not only reduces administrative workload but also helps improve accuracy and security.
6. Review Payroll Reports Regularly
Payroll reports provide insights into labor costs, overtime trends, and workforce spending. Reviewing these reports regularly can help you make informed decisions, manage budgets, and identify opportunities for operational improvement.
7. Partner with a Financial Institution That Supports Your Business
A trusted credit union can be an important resource for managing your business finances. In addition to business checking accounts and lending solutions, many credit unions offer tools and services that can help streamline payroll and cash flow management.
How a Credit Union Can Support Your Payroll Needs
Managing payroll is easier when you have the right financial tools. Business checking accounts, digital banking services, direct deposit capabilities, and cash management solutions can help improve efficiency and ensure employees receive their pay on time.

PPP Forgiveness Application Deadline
Congress passed The Economic Aid Act which changed the deferment period from 6 months post covered period to 10 months post covered period. For example, if your covered period ended June 30, 2021, under the new guidelines the earliest your first loan payment wouldn’t be due until April 2022, and you have until then to request forgiveness. Please use the following calculation to help you identify when your forgiveness will be due:
PPP borrowers may select a covered period anywhere from 8 weeks to 24 weeks.
RCU is automatically calculating your loan due date based on a 24-week covered period, if you intend on using a shorter covered period please inform us immediately as this will impact your due date.
Your correct deadline will be reflected in your online banking account.
If all or part of your PPP loan is not forgiven, your first loan payment will be due the first of the following month after a decision is made by the SBA.
