Prioritize security in the new year

The best resolution for this new year is to increase your personal online security habits. Because we use usernames and passwords for everything from mobile apps to websites to digital banking, it’s important to have strong login credentials and use the latest best practices for securing your personal information. Here are a few smart tips for protecting your personal information and avoiding scammers.

  • Use unique usernames and passwords for every online account to keep your other accounts safe if one becomes compromised.
  • Usernames should be at least 10 characters long, and passwords should be 12-14 characters long.
  • Use multifactor authentication (MFA) whenever possible to make gaining access to an account more difficult.
  • Use a secure password manager to keep your passwords for you, so you only need to remember one login, and set up MFA.
  • Use complex passwords or passphrases that are difficult to guess. You can generate them using a random password generator to make them unrelated to anything in your life that might be guessable.

It’s important to remember: RCU will never contact you and ask you to confirm your digital banking username, password, card number, or six-digit verification code.

We’re here to help you stay vigilant and protect your information and hard-earned money. If you have questions or think you may have been a victim of fraud, please report it to RCU’s Fraud Department at 1 (800) 479-7928 or contact us online. Consider sharing your story with friends and family to help them protect themselves. We all need to work together to shine a light on fraudulent activity.
